Outlook Web Access - Change password

I wanted to allow Outlook Web Access users, on a SBS 2003 server, the ability to change their passwords. You need to create a Virtual Directory in IIS on the SBS server, then install a small OWA admin app to enable this.

Petri's website had a guide to this which worked great: http://www.petri.co.il/enable_password_changing_through_owa_in_exchange_2003.htm

The OWA admin tool has lots of other options you can tweak for your OWA users, which would normally mean you have to do a reg tweak.

Got password? Change your Windows passwords - crack it!

One of my clients had a problem where, for some unknown reason, they or some program had set a password on their only user account on their new Vista Sony Vaio laptop. What ever password they would try, it didn't work.

Of course, they didn't have the rebuild DVDs on hand (normally it is cheaper for me to just reinstall the OS on the laptop), so I opted to crack the password(s) on the laptop.

I tried 3 different tools. Most password cracking tools are based on a boot up linux based tool. Problem with these and the Sony Vaio, is that the laptops hardware is so new, these boot discs would hang on boot up.

Solution, take the hard drive out, hook it up to a "vanilla" PC, and then run the tools.

    Tools used:

    1. http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/
    2. http://www.pcloginnow.com/
    3. http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

I ended up just making the existing user accounts have no password - and used PC Login Now. Didn't work out how to log into Vista Home Premium via the administrator account (which didn't have a password) - yes I did try booting via safemode - but got in by clearing the passwords.

This just goes to show if you have any sensitive data on your laptop, encrypt it first with something like Trucrypt!

GoToAssist Express beta vs. meetmenow = GTA wins

I have been using GoToAssist Express for a few months now, and I can say that it is a better choice for remote support over my previous favourite meetmenow.

First off, GoToAssist Express is still in beta, so there are a few bugs and it is free...for now.

It will be more expensive but I think the Citrix based tech behind GoToAssit is much faster than webex`s meetmenow. One feature I haven`t used yet is the reboot (and restore the session post reboot) yet.

Drive recovery fun with SpinRite and Ycopy

So I had a dead external drive from a client to fix. I tried EVERYTHING with this one, and was by far the most troublesome so far.

I followed my colleague Joe's advice, did the whole put the drive in the freeze, wrapped up thing, then use some windows based drive recovery tool. NOTHING worked.

Just when I was about to give up, I remembered a utility that was mentioned during a DL.tv episode - Spinrite.

Now this will run off a boot cd, and slowly check/repair the drive. I popped out the drive from the external enclosure and hooked it up to a spare computer for 4 weeks - it took that long.

Of course the client had no backup, (now I see why specialized drive recovery companies charge thousands).

After this process, I then used Y Copy with the drive attached to a Windows machine. This allowed me to copy and skip dead files. In the end I was able to get back 95% of the data (from a 120gig drive), where as previous attempts were only able to get a few megs before copy/rescue options failed!
